Week 6: John 8:36
'So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed'.
Although the past is in the past and it is somewhere you physically cannot go back to, it has a powerful way of holding you captive. Even when you think it was something that you dealt with long ago. When John said this statement of being 'free indeed' there was no promise that the freedom would be easy to hold. In Corinthians 10:5 it says that we are to 'hold captive every thought.' Why? Because the past is one of the enemies weapons. And the mind can be his playing field. Yes you made mistakes. Yes you did things you were not proud of. However the wonderful thing about God's loving grace is that he uses our past as opportunities for the future. From your past experiences you are able to empathise with the next person and build them up, and empower and heal you at the same time. God turns things around for good. So the next time you feel shame or guilt, kill the lie by holding that thought captive and remembering that God sees you today as you are. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23) and he takes our past and turns it into prosperity. Trust him with your past, trust him with your present and trust him with your future.
This Week's Reflection
Say to yourself, "I am FREE today and I will be free tomorrow. My past no longer holds me captive, for I am free!"
